Workshop Goal

Welcome to the virtual workshop on “Precipitation Estimation from LEO Satellites: Retrieval and Applications.” The primary objective of this workshop is to update the research development for satellite sensors, precipitation measurement, uncertainty, and model with a specific emphasis on weather forecasting and hydrologic applications. By bringing together precipitation experts from sensor developers, remote sensing precipitation algorithm developers, and data users, the workshop will discuss the operational algorithms and products from current and future meteorological satellites and the operational dataset for users’ needs.

The outcomes from this user engagement activity will help the LEO program formulate future missions and architectures for measuring precipitation from space. This workshop is organized by the Center for Hydrometeorology and Remote Sensing, University of California, Irvine.

Workshop Dates & Meeting Agenda:

This workshop was held on March 1-2, 2023.

This workshop covered four major themes:

  • Theme 1: NOAA and international communities’ plan on LEO satellites and sensors
  • Theme 2: Precipitation measurements and algorithms from LEO and combined satellite sensors
  • Theme 3: Precipitation estimation and uncertainties
  • Theme 4: Users and applications
