This talk explores what El Niño is, how NOAA monitors and forecasts it, and how unusually warm tropical Pacific waters can influence weather patterns around the world. It also examines the outlook for the coming months, including potential impacts on U.S. storm tracks, hurricane seasons, and agriculture, as well as remaining uncertainties.

This talk explores why seasonal El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) outlooks are important, how NOAA monitors and predicts ENSO, and the observations and models that inform those forecasts. It also highlights how these outlooks provide valuable information for planning and decision-making across society.

The 1877–78 El Niño was likely one of the strongest El Niño events on record, potentially exceeding the strength of the major 1982–83, 1997–98, and 2015–16 events. New analysis of NOAA’s ERSSTv5 data, including adjustments that reduce uncertainty in the historical record, suggests the event was both exceptionally strong and statistically significant.
