One of Mount Etna's largest eruptions in decades occurred on December 3, 2015. The Suomi NPP satellite passed over the region on December 9, 2015, capturing this relatively cloud-free image. This false colored image shows the volcano, along with the crater's hot spot and stream of smoke, using both thermal and visible channels on the satellite's VIIRS instrument.
