2020 Community Meeting on NOAA Satellites

Informing the Future of NOAA Satellite Observations

When: September 29 – October 2, 2020
Where: Virtual Meeting

NOAA is currently formulating plans for the satellite programs that will follow GOES-R, JPSS, and SWFO and be operational in 2030 and beyond. We would like to hear from you – our data users, partners, and stakeholders – to help inform these important decisions. Please join us for the 2020 Community Meeting on NOAA Satellites where you will hear about the strategic objectives of NESDIS and about current activities and future plans for the Geostationary and Extended Orbits (GEO-XO), low-Earth orbit (LEO), and Space Weather programs.

Session topics will also include NOAA ground system evolution, updates from international meteorological agencies, and recent feedback from our users about what they need in future observing systems. We will have dedicated discussion time throughout the meeting in order to hear from you, and we are planning “lean in” sessions where we will invite community members to share their thoughts about NOAA’s future observing systems. We look forward to your participation!

Meeting Objectives

  • Discuss NOAA Satellites future program planning and formulation
  • Find out what we’ve learned about user needs from recent workshops
  • Provide opportunities for stakeholders, partners, and satellite data users to share thoughts and ideas on NOAA future satellite planning
  • Hear from international meteorological agencies about their satellite program plans

Lean-in Sessions

During the meeting, there will be two industry and user lean-in sessions on October 1 and October 2. These lean-in sessions will be an opportunity for stakeholders to share their thoughts and ideas on NOAA future satellite planning for the 2030-2050 timeframe. Within the registration form is a section where you can indicate your interest in providing a short (5-minute) oral presentation at the meeting and/or providing a one-page written presentation directly to NESDIS to address specific stakeholder needs, products, and/or services.

The deadline to submit an oral and/or written presentation topic for consideration is September 11, 2020.

If you indicate an interest in providing a short presentation, the meeting organizing committee will contact you regarding your presentation. The deadline for submitting your presentation to the organizing committee for review is September 15, 2020. Depending on the volume of submissions, we may not be able to accommodate all requests for oral presentations at the Community Meeting. Decisions on the 5-minute oral presentations will be made by September 22, 2020.

Agenda

See below for information about each meeting session and a link to the draft agenda.

Each session will include time for discussion. Note that we will be holding two evening sessions with our Asian partners due to time zone differences. Listed time periods reflect Eastern Daylight Time.

September 29

  • Session I (Day): Interact with NESDIS leaders about NOAA satellite strategic objectives, and find out what we have learned about our users’ needs in recent workshops.
  • Session II (Evening): Hear a recap of NOAA satellites strategic objectives (repeat session I) and get an update on the plans of meteorological agencies in Asia.

September 30

  • Session III (Day): Discuss NOAA’s future GEO-XO, LEO and Space Weather programs with those who are planning them.
  • Session IV (Evening): Hear a recap on GEO-XO, LEO and Space Weather (repeat of session III) with discussion with Asian partners.

October 1

  • Session V (Day): Engage with Western Hemisphere and European meteorological and environmental agencies on their plans, and take the opportunity to share your thoughts and ideas on NOAA future satellite planning in the first “lean in” session.

October 2

  • Session VI (Day): Learn about NOAA’s future ground systems plans, and have another opportunity to share your ideas on NOAA future satellite planning.

GEO-XO User Needs Virtual Workshops

As part of the Community Meeting on NOAA Satellites, we will be discussing the findings from a virtual workshop series that NOAA is conducting to connect with key end users in a variety of sectors to determine how satellite data informs work in those areas.

These workshops are gathering feedback on NOAA's environmental satellite data products through structured discussion. User needs identified during these workshops will help inform the remote sensing capabilities of NOAA's next generation of environmental satellites, including the GEO-XO program.

The links below provide information specific to each workshop, including registration and agenda information for upcoming workshops along with session recordings and findings for past workshops.
