Partnership Policy Implementation Product Changes

NESDIS provides an array of environmental information products and services. In accordance with the NOAA Policy on Partnerships in the Provision of Environmental Information, first issued in January 2006, NESDIS invites the public to comment upon currently proposed changes to significant environmental information products and services.

The Notice of Changes lists proposed changes to information products and services. The sections below describe the procedures for submitting comments regarding specific change proposals.

NESDIS also welcomes general comments regarding its implementation of the above policy.

  • NESDIS will provide e-mail confirmation of receipt of comments.
  • The open period for public comment will be a minimum of 30 calendar days after the posting date.
  • Decisions will be posted in the status area of the Notice of Changes, typically within 30 calendar days from the close of the comment period.

GOES-R Volcanic Ash: Detection and Height

Type of change:

Termination of 2km Full Disk products

Description:

NESDIS plans to discontinue the production of the operational 2km resolution GOES-R Volcanic Ash Detection and Height product. National Weather Service has not found an operational need for this product and not other NOAA operational user has been identified. Forecasters at the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centers (VAACs) have found it adequate to use a combination of the CIMSS produced VOLCAT product in addition to operational ABI L1b and L2 imagery products (including their RGB visualizations) to track volcanic ash.

Product retirement is planned for December 2, 2020

Termination of FIMMA-AVHRR products

Description:

NESDIS plans to discontinue Fire Detects from the Fire Identification, Mapping and Monitoring Algorithm (FIMMA)-AVHRR products. It is being replaced with Fire Detects from the VIIRS Active Fire Algorithm (VIIRS AF) products. Product retirement is planned for June 23, 2020

Coral Reef Monitoring products and web images

Type of change:

Termination of 50km Coral Reef Monitoring products

Description:

NESDIS plans to discontinue all operational 50km resolution satellite coral bleaching heat stress monitoring products. They are being replaced with higher resolution 5km satellite products. 50km products to be retired and replaced with 5km products are: sea surface temperature (SST), SST Anomaly, Coral Bleaching HotSpot, coral bleaching Degree Heating Week, Bleaching Alert Area, and the Virtual Stations. Archived data and images will still be available at https://coralreefwatch.noaa.gov. Research-supported 5km resolution versions of the products and images are available now at: https://coralreefwatch.noaa.gov/product/5km/index.php.

Description:

NESDIS intends to retire Green Vegetation Fraction (GVF) and Vegetation Health Products (VHP) from AVHRR in March of this year. Attached is the Retirement Notification Form with products and announcement information in this email.

The manual Dvorak fixes and Advanced Dvorak Technique (ADT)

Type of change:

Termination part of the manual Dvorak fixes and Advanced Dvorak Technique (ADT) products

Description:

The manual Dvorak fixes issued by SAB for tropical disturbances and tropical cyclonesin the Eastern and Southern Hemispheres, such as those found at: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/ are being considered for retirement. Specific basins affected are the West Pacific, NorthIndian, South Indian, South Pacific, South Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. The ADTbased on forecasts issued by RSMCs in the Eastern and Southern Hemisphere is alsobeing considered for retirement. Specifically, ADT output found on http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/adt.html under the headers for New Delhi, Tokyo, La Reunion, Australia and Nadi would nolonger be produced. All other ADT output would continue to be available to users,including ADT output based on JTWC forecasts in the affected areas. Interested partiesmay address their comments and concerns regarding this proposed retirement to Michael.Turk@noaa.gov through November 18, 2016.

This message is to inform our users that nesdis is considering:Discontinuing the SPENES (txus20) product and significantly reducing the frequency of precipitation coordination through 12 planet and nws chat. There is no real time user for NESDIS Calibrated SSM/IS TDR in OSPO product audit conducted in 2011. STAR is the only user and has agreed to run the F16 calibrated SSM/IS TDR software application in house.

11km Global Geo-Polar Blended Sea Surface Temperature (SST) AnalysisData set available at: NESDIS Office of Satellite and Product Operations

Discontinue production of this product on September 1, 2013.

Description:

Note: The replacement product at 5 km grid spacing is currently in production (operational May 2012).An SST analysis incorporating satellite-borne instruments is a true global analysis. Each instrument has its own strengths and weaknesses, depending on the sensor type, platform, orbit, etc.

Description:

The Global Ecosystems Database (GED) project began in 1990 as an Interagency project between the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Environmental Research Laboratory in Corvallis, Oregon (ERL-C).
