The processing of MODIS/Aqua Ehux bloom and calcite products

April 21, 2014

Type of change: Termination of the processing of MODIS/Aqua Ehux bloom and calcite products

The generation of global MODIS/Aqua Emiliania huxleyi bloom and calcite concentration products will be terminated on 22 May 2014 unless a NOAA operational user for either of these products is identified prior to this date. Though the E. huxleyi bloom and calcite products provide valuable information to assist in monitoring the response of the marine ecosystem to ocean acidification and climate change, we have not identified any NOAA operational users that will use either of these two products. As a result, the NOAA Satellite Product and Services Review Board has recommended that the Office of Satellite and Products Operations terminate the processing of these two products until NOAA operational users for these products are identified. The MODIS/Aqua E. huxleyi bloom and calcite products have been generated and distributed to the user community since October 2012. They are monitored at http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/ocean/color/index.html , and are accessible in ftp://cw-okeanos.noaa.gov/pub/data1/EHUX_data_experimental/. Note that the products have been reduced from 24 regions (global coverage) to six regions since 6 March 2014.
