The GOES-R Series Magnetometer (MAG) instrument measures the charged particles found in the outer area of the magnetosphere that are a dangerous radiation hazard to spacecraft and human spaceflight. In addition, the measurements taken by MAG can aid companies in providing alerts and warnings to their power and satellite customers due to the damage a change in magnetic flux can have on electric power grids and radio communications.
