Type of change: Replacement / Retirement
The replacement GOES 1x1Sounding BUFR Retrievals product will begin transmission to the user on November 22nd at 15Z UTC. The GOES 5x5 Sounding Retrievals are vertical atmospheric temperature or moisture profiles derived from radiances measurements. The radiance measurements are from a variety of instruments flown on NESDIS’ current GOES EAST/WEST weather satellites. The GOES 5x5 bufr sounding retrievals are being generated twice per hour per satellite. All of the retrievals are placed into BUFR format to be utilized by users. The profiles are averaged over a 5x5 pixel area giving a resolution of 50 km. The new and improved 1x1 bufr sounding retrievals that have replaced the 5x5 are at 10 km resolution and give profile information for each pixel. This improvement equates to about .4 mm for Precipitable Water (PW) and about .3o - .5o K for temperature. The increase in the amount of data being produced and transmitted to the users per hour, allows for more overall detailed analytical information.
