Marco Vargas, Ph.D.

Program Coordinator, NOAA

Marco Vargas is the Program Coordinator for the SWFO Program. In this role, he supports the Program Manager in the day-to-day operations of the SWFO Program. Vargas supports formulation activities and Program reviews, coordinates SWFO related activities with Program stakeholders, facilitates weekly management tag up meetings and coordinates the development of program-level briefings prepared for NOAA/NESDIS and NASA senior management and customers.

Before joining the NOAA NESDIS Office of Projects, Planning, and Analysis (OPPA) in 2017, Vargas was a Physical Scientist at the NOAA NESDIS Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) for 11 years. He led the development of several land vegetation operational products from the VIIRS sensor for use by the National Weather Service National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NWS/NCEP). Vargas began his NOAA career in 2006.

Vargas received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the City College of New York, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Remote Sensing from the City University of New York in New York City.
