The initial tank on fire had approximately 3 million gallons of naphtha. There were several nearby tanks also containing other hazardous highly flammable chemicals. Because of the expanding toxic fire, ominous black smoke plume and proximity to the Houston metropolitan area, this event quickly became a national news story. The National Weather Service Houston/Galveston office supported this event for nearly a month, and deployed an Incident Meteorologist to support Harris county emergency management.
