The JPSS Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite instrument incorporates technological advances that provide early detection and constant monitoring of wildfires over a wide range of observing and environmental conditions. The image of the Mustang Complex Fire in Idaho, 2012, shows numerous fire locations across the state.
Northwest Nazarene University SmallSat Launched with NOAA-20
MakerSat-0 was a technology proof-of-concept mission launched with JPSS-1 (now NOAA-20) that supported multiple science payloads developed by independent teams. During the MakerSat-0 mission, one university science team measured the mass loss of several additive-manufactured polymers in orbit. The materials were expected to undergo mass loss due to monoatomic oxygen radicals, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, ionizing radiation, and outgassing. A high school science team payload was also flown.
