Transcript:

NOAA satellites have been closely monitoring the development and path of Hurricane Lowell since it first formed into a tropical storm in late August.

On Sept. 8, Lowell passed west of Hawaii as a Category 2 hurricane bringing damaging winds, heavy rain and hazardous surf.

The storm caused flash flooding and left nearly 90% of Kauai without power.

Lowell began as a tropical storm in the eastern Pacific on Aug. 27, forming west of Tropical Storm Karina.

On Sept. 1, Lowell rapidly intensified from a tropical storm into a Category 4 hurricane.

The storm further intensified into a Category 5 storm on Sept. 2.

After weakening to a Category 3, Lowell rapidly reintensified to Category 5 strength on Sept. 4.

NOAA satellites provide vital information for forecasting hurricanes and monitoring their location, movement and intensity.

Rapid, high-resolution imagery from GOES-18  (GOES West) gave forecasters a detailed look at changes in the storm's structure, helping them pinpoint its center of circulation and estimate its intensity, while tracking the storm in near real-time.

NOAA’s polar orbiting JPSS satellites provided additional information about the state of the ocean and atmosphere near Lowell by measuring sea surface temperature, atmospheric temperature and moisture.

Together, NOAA satellites provide critical information for forecasters before, during and after a hurricane.
