NOAA-20 Imagery Shows Intensity of Oklahoma’s Rhea Fire
The Rhea fire began on Thursday, April 12, 2018 in Dewey and Custer Counties, north of Weatherford, Oklahoma. The fire grew quickly; taking advantage of Red Flag fire-weather conditions and grew to more than 260,000 acres. On April 18, NOAA-20 captured these Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) images of the blaze, each of which highlights a different aspect of the fire. The JPSS VIIRS instrument incorporates technological advances that provide early detection and monitoring of wildfires over a wide range of observing and environmental conditions.
