JPSS Helps Measure Extent of Spring Floods in Iowa
The New York Times analyzed satellite data from JPSS, using flood detection software that is frequently used in emergency response, to measure the scope of the 2019 spring floods in the Midwest. The data shows a catastrophe along the Missouri, Mississippi and Arkansas Rivers, a system that drains more than 40 percent of the landmass of the continental United States. In Hamburg, Iowa, home to over a thousand people, flood waters from the Missouri River breached a levee that had long been in need of repair.
