Irma Passes Eastern Cuba

GOES-16 captured this geocolor image of Hurricane Irma passing the eastern end of Cuba at about 8:00 am (eastern) on September 8, 2017. According to the latest information from NOAA’s National Hurricane Center, Irma is located about 270 miles east of Caibarien, Cuba, and moving toward the west-northwest near 14 miles per hour. Forecasters say the eye of Irma should move near the north coast of Cuba and the central Bahamas today and Saturday (9/9), and be near the Florida Keys and the southern Florida Peninsula Sunday (9/10) morning. Irma, now a category 4 storm, has maximum sustained winds near 150 mph with higher gusts. Some fluctuations in intensity are likely during the next day or two, but Irma is forecast to remain a powerful category 4 hurricane as it approaches Florida.
