September 15, 2015
Image of the Volga River

The Volga River, Europe's longest and largest river by volume, flows from northwest Russia into the Caspian Sea. The delta created by the river's discharge is seen here in this multi-spectral imagery from the Suomi NPP satellite's VIIRS sensor. The image, captured on September 19, 2015, uses the high resolution thermal imagery bands (SVI 4, 2, 1), along with color enhancements. This combination of bands creates a helps to distinguish wetland and coastal areas from open water and dry land.
