NOAA Satellite Operations Facility (NSOF) in Suitland, Maryland

On Wednesday, September 15, NBC Channel 4 broadcast a recent visit by NBC meteorologist Veronica Johnson to the NOAA Satellite Operations Facility (NSOF) in Suitland, Maryland. She stated that "all the satellite information that we use as broadcasters come from there. Most of that information is processed out of that building right there before it goes out and is distributed."

Veronica Johnson summed it up as, "That's our eye in the sky -- 24/7."

The NSOF building was officially opened on June 11, 2007. It houses 549 employees from NOAA, Department of Defense, U.S. Coast Guard, NASA and government contractors. Operations include: NOAA's Satellite Operations Control Center, which provides command, control, and communications for NOAA's satellites and DMSP; a computer center that processes the satellite data, the U.S. Mission Control Center for the Search and Rescue Satellite-Aided Tracing program (COSPAS-SATSAT), and the National Ice Center.
