JPSS Science Mission Goals

Information about our planet is vital to our ability to plan, predict, respond, and to protect lives and property. Our Nation's system of polar-orbiting environmental satellites is vitally important and essential for supporting climate research as well as operational weather and storm forecasting for civil, military, and international partners as well as climate research. JPSS Science Mission Goals are to increase the accuracy and reliability of weather forecasting capabilities especially for severe weather and tropical cyclones, improve ocean and coastal applications' use of polar-orbiting satellite data, continue and enhance our long-term environmental data sets to facilitate long-term climate monitoring and prediction, and enhance land applications.

The goal of weather prediction is to provide information people and organizations can use to reduce weather-related losses and enhance societal benefits, including protection of life and property, public health and safety, and support of economic prosperity and quality of life.
