JPSS Ground System

The ground system for the JPSS mission is a global network of receiving stations linked to NOAA and the Department of Defense, who then distribute data and derived products to users worldwide. The JPSS ground system will provide fresh data from the satellite to users more quickly than ever before. As JPSS is a system of spacecraft broader than the two main JPSS satellites, the ground system was accordingly designed to support the entire range of JPSS-related missions, including:

  • JPSS climate free flyer satellites,
  • The NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP),
  • The Defense Weather Satellite System (DWSS) and Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP),
  • The European Metop satellite,
  • The Japanese Global Change Observation Mission (GCOM),
  • U.S. Navy Windsat mission

The JPSS ground system development project is focusing on the following areas:

  • Mission Planning and Satellite control
  • Satellite data retrieval, routing and pre-processing
  • Data processing and distribution
  • Direct broadcast support
  • Algorithm development and maintenance
  • On-orbit calibration and validation
  • Long-term trending
