Race for the Cure - All-Hands Message
April 11, 2002

MEMORANDUM FOR:   National Capital Area NOAA Employees
FROM:                      Christine L. Alex, Mary M. Glackin Co-Captains,
NOAA's Race for the Cure Team
SUBJECT:                  Race for the Cure

Join the Admiral and Mrs. Lautenbacher, Scott Gudes, and other co-workers in the fight against breast cancer by participating in NOAA's Race for the Cure Team. The Race for the Cure is on Saturday June 1, 2002 and is the world's largest 5-kilometer run/walk. Proceeds from the Race support breast cancer research, education, screening, outreach and treatment programs.

The NOAA Team which is in its fourth year, is named "Running with the Currents" (team code RWC). Last year we had 392 members and collected approximately $3500 in donations. This year we have set a goal of 450 team members and $4000 in donations.

For more information about NOAA's Team and the Race for the Cure, check the NOAA Team's race for the Cure web site at:

http://www.nesdis.noaa.gov/RaceCure/2002/

You don't need to be a NOAA employee to join the NOAA team. NOAA employees, contractors, friends, and family members are welcome to join. Both runners and walkers are encouraged to participate. If you can't participate, consider supporting a co-worker by making a donation.

You can register for the Race at many of the NOAA buildings (see below), through the mail, on-line, or at any of the corporate-sponsored walk-in registration sites. To register, complete a registration form and write a check for $25 made out to "Komen National Race for the Cure" to cover the registration fees and your Race T-shirt. We are asking each participant to get two sponsors to make a donation -- this is optional but encouraged. The donation needs to be in a separate check(s), also made out to "Komen National Race for the Cure". To make a donation, use the registration form (check the donation box), even if you are not registering for the Race. NO CASH will be accepted for either registration or donations.

The Silver Spring Metro Center (SSMC) campus, Federal Office Building #4 (FOB4), the World Weather Building (WWB), and the Main Commerce Building (HCHB) will have on-campus registration tables as shown below:

For NOAA buildings not listed above, check with your building focal point (see below) for procedures for registering. The deadline for accepting on campus registration at all NOAA buildings is Wednesday, May 1, 2002. After that date, you can still register as a member of NOAA's Team using one of the other registration options shown in the registration form and on the NOAA Team web site. Regardless of how you register, if you use our team acronym "RWC" on your registration form, you will be a NOAA team member. If you do register directly (not through the building focal points), please drop us (Chris or Mary) an email so we can include you on Race Day procedure e-mails.

In addition to supporting a great cause, this is nice way to get to know your co-workers at NOAA better. Please wear your NOAA paraphernalia on Race day, along with your Race T-shirt. If you don't have any NOAA accessories, check the following web site for what is available.
