NOAA Satellites & Information Service NESDIS - FY2005 Budget Request

NOAA's National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service, also known as "NOAA Satellites and Information Service" (NESDIS) requests a total of $897.881 million (M) in the FY2005 President's Budget Request. This is an $70.686M increase over the FY2004 Omnibus Conference. The FY2005 request will allow NESDIS to continue providing operational products and services while developing critical space- and ground-based observational systems that will serve the Nation's needs now and in the decades to come.

Highlights include:
Operations, Research and Facilities (ORF):
- $96.473M for Environmental Satellite Observing Systems
- $52.510M for NOAA's Data Centers & Information Services

Procurement, Acquisitions and Construction (PAC):
- $722.993M for Satellite Acquisitions
- $9.6M for Data Archive System Enhancements
- $16.305M for Facilities and Critical Infrastructure Improvements

Environmental Satellite Observing Systems

- $41.974M for satellite command and control of NOAA's GOES and POES, and operations and maintenance of NOAA Satellite Operations Facility (NSOF).

- $27.245M for processing and distributing operational satellite data products and services that are critical for saving lives and property from severe weather and natural disasters, navigation hazards due to sea ice, as well as search and rescue of mariners and aviators in distress.

- $26.008M for product development from current and future NOAA satellite systems.

- $1.246M to regulate commercial remote sensing systems.

NOAA's Data Centers & Information Services

- $52.510M for data access and archive, database modernization, and retrospective analyses of atmospheric, geophysical, and oceanographic data in NOAA's National Data Centers holdings and NOAA Library system.

Systems Acquisitions - Satellite Development and Ground Systems

- $414.106M for NOAA polar-orbiting satellites:
    - $106.460M for NOAA K-N' series. NOAA N' Recovery Plan will be available later in 2004.
    - $307.646M for NOAA's portion of the NPOESS program for instruments, risk reduction activities and system development for a 2009 launch.

- $308.887M for NOAA geostationary satellites:
    - $0.6M for GOES I-M contingency.
    - $150.765M for GOES-N series.
    - $157.522M for GOES-R series instruments and risk reduction for a 2012 launch.

Data Archive System Enhancements

- $9.6M for CLASS and EOS Archive enhancements at NOAA National Data Centers.

Construction & Critical Infrastructure

$16.305M for critical infrastructure:
- $11.255M for building outfitting and continuity of operations during the move into NSOF.
- $2.250M to maintain command and data acquisition facilities in Fairbanks, AK, and Wallops Island, VA.
- $2.8M to establish an off-site back-up for operational product processing systems.
